Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Posted by cloud under: Uncategorized .
Mixed martial-arts is the quickest growing sport in the world. It has given people an outlet to check their talents against other talented wrestlers in the name of sport. MMA implements a range of strikes like kicks, punches, elbows and knees depending on the guidelines ruling that actual event. MMA also enables wrestlers to take their competitor down using throws or wrestling and once on the ground MMA wrestlers use grappling to submit their contestant or punish them with strikes till the referee stops the fight.
I myself have competed in MMA and did reasonably well.
I lost some fights and I won some fights but I had a blast competing. I love MMA. MMA wrestlers are a few of the best sportsmen in the world and best conditioned. I have great respect for anybody prepared to put their body thru the tiring coaching needed to be a successful fighter. The difficulty I have with some MMA wrestlers is their total absence of respect for the normal martial arts. These wrestlers are in the minority in their technique of thinking as most MMA wrestlers have huge respect for standard martial arts. These wrestlers are most regularly beginners who don’t put in the time nor the energy in coaching but instead do it only for the point of the label. These guys think being labeled a “MMA fighter” will bring them respect and give them a higher standing inside society or at least in the martial arts community. My query is what precisely do these “MMA fighters” believe they are doing? Afterall if you break down the moniker MMA it stands for MIXED martial-arts. MMA wrestlers are martial artists who train in a selection of styles of martial arts in a cross-breed fashion.
Sure many MMA faculties don’t carry with them the generally accepted values and philosophies of standard dojos like discipline, self image, respect, integrity, and honor…but the bulk of them do. The fact is these wrestlers who are lacking respect for conventional martial arts are inexperienced.
Simply put they are practicing conventional martial arts and they do not even realize it. Albeit it’s a watered down version of different martial arts mixed therefore the “mixed” in mixed martial arts. They use fighting for hand strikes ; Taekwondo, Karate, and Kickboxing for their kicks ; Ju-Jitsu for their submissions ; Judo and wrestling for their throws and takedowns………all standard martial arts. Again MMA is designed for sport NOT self-defense. MMA is controlled by rules like weight classes, no tiny joint manipulations, no strikes to the groin, no strikes to joints, no kneeing a downed contestant in the head, no eye gauging, no chums authorized to take part the fight, no rocks, no knives, no chairs, no glass bottles…….you get my drift. Standard martial arts like Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Judo, and Aikido etc were developed and designed for life or death scenarios. The whole point of this post is that I forcefully believe that ALL martial art styles have to be respected. Every martial art brings a novel facet to self-defense. Sure we develop our own philosophies, opinions, and way of taking a look at other martial arts but in the final analysis all of them should be given respect. This is my opinion and my opinion alone though I’m sure plenty will agree.
